Manar Abdelmaaboud works in collage, painting, and drawing to lodge political anxiety inside the most ordinary of spaces: the daily commute. In the Subway Series, cartoon figures and political news imagery erupt into painted subway cars, rupturing the familiar rhythm of the ride and pulling the viewer's attention toward the politics quietly embedded in everyday life. Yet the commuters take no notice, undisturbed by the strange company around them — a quiet tension the artist admits she isn't sure can ever really shift how we see.
